Blithfield Reservoir Angling Report
For the week ending 11th June 2017

Boats bring in the best returns this week...
Despite gales and torrential rain at various intervals this week, the reservoir has continued to produce fabulous sport.
On Friday 9th June we were pleased to host an ATEFF Qualifier heat which saw 34 anglers taking part. The results confirmed the exceptional sport being enjoyed here at the moment with a very creditable rod average of 10.26 being recorded.
The best methods employed were dry fly and ‘pulling’ tactics within the top two feet of water. After a very sporting day the results were –
1st place – Mark Withyman
2nd place – Steve Cullen
3rd place – Mark Miles
Best fish was a 3lb rainbow caught by Paul Davison.
The banks this week produced moderate returns but the balance of the sport now is beginning to favour boat fishing. Anglers new to boat fishing at Blithfield may be interested to note that boats can be hired for as few as four hours, starting at any time, with additional hours charged at £2.50 per hour, per boat (boats cannot be extended if an angler is fishing on a four hour permit).
The ups-and-downs of fly fishing were profoundly illustrated this week when two Season Permit holders visited another reservoir but were not able to fish due to a booking mix-up. The intrepid pair decided to return to Blithfield and the earlier disappointment was soon forgotten as they landed their personal best returns with an incredible 45 fish to their boat – all to dry fly tactics. Well done indeed to Mr. Pat Burton and Mr. Nigel Hodkinson !
Noteworthy returns this week include on Monday 5th June when visiting rods Mr. Powell and Mr. Nunn paired up in a boat on the South Lake and recorded 11 fish to their boat ; on the 6th June, despite winds of 42mph, Permit holder Mr. Barry Turner fished from the banks and returned a total of 8 fish. On the 7th the best bank bag went to visiting rod Mr. Geoff Stanley with a total of 12 fish returned using Klinkhammer and buzzer patterns whilst boat anglers also enjoyed excellent sport with visiting rods Mr. Ed Foster and Mr. Paul Haskey pairing up and fishing across the South Lake to return a total of 20 fish to their boat, and Mr. John Calvert and Mr. Andrew Esplin fishing dry fly patterns in the breezy conditions to record a total to their boat of 27 fish. The 8th saw a continuation of excellent boat sport with Permit holders Mr. George Eardley and Mr. Edwin Biddle fishing from a boat on the South Lake and returning a total of 34 fish between them, all caught on dry flies. Also on the 8th visiting rods Mr. Tony Baldwin and Mr. Tim Wellman fished as a pair from a boat in preparation for the ATEFF Qualifier the following day and recorded a boat total of more than 27 fish and Mr. Mark Withyman and Mr. Paul Davison also fished a practice day and retuned 35 fish to their boat. On Saturday 10th a great afternoon’s sport was enjoyed by Season Permit holders Mr. Pat Burton and Mr. Nigel Hodkinson with an incredible boat total of 45 fish between them – again all caught on dry flies. Rounding of yet another fabulous week on Sunday 11th was Season Permit holder Mr. Phil Sadler with 8 fish to his boat, the best being a 3lb rainbow trout caught on a claret Bob’s Bits, whilst visiting rods Mr. Hollick and Mr. Bridger caught 7 fish apiece to return a boat total of 14 fish.
A reminder this week to all anglers regarding the submission of catch returns. Please complete and submit a catch return at the end of your visit and ensure it is dated and signed - our stocking policy and rod averages rely on these figures.
The rod average is 5.67
